X, also known as Mega Man X or Rockman X in Japan, is the protagonist of the Mega Man X video game series by Capcom. He first appeared in Mega Man X on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993.

X is a highly advanced robot, created by Dr. Thomas Light, possessing free will and the ability to think and feel. Dr. Light feared that X's advanced nature could be dangerous, so he sealed X away in a capsule designed to run diagnostic tests for 30 years to ensure X was stable.

Discovered by Dr. Cain over 100 years later, X's design became the basis for a new generation of robots called Reploids. However, some Reploids, known as Mavericks, began to malfunction and turn against humans. X, burdened by the potential for destruction inherent in his design, chose to fight alongside the Maverick Hunters to protect humanity.
